Retina Consultants building new facility on Summit Mall Complex

building

Posted: Monday, August 17, 2015 3:00 am

By Mia Summerson mia.summerson@niagara-gazette.com

Construction has begun on a new 9,000 square foot medical office on the Williams Road side of the Summit Mall complex.

The new building will be occupied by Retina Consultants, a group of optometrists who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the retina and vitreous of the eye. The practice has offices at three Western New York locations, including one across the street from the new location in the Summit Healthplex.

“As a retina group, most of our patients are over the age of 65,” said Administrator Jerry Maciejewski. “They have difficulty seeing, or can’t see, and trying to find us in 100,000 square foot building with limited signage and their visual impairments makes it difficult. Let alone walking from the parking lot to the facility is a little far, it’s really a matter of convenience for patients.”

The building will be located near the main entrance to the mall off of Williams Road, near where the small M&T Bank branch used to be located. They firm purchased the property from new Summit Mall owner Zoran Cocov.

The new building while have space enough for both Retina Consultants and another business. They plan to rent the space out, ideally to another medical firm.

“We’re going to occupy 45,000 square feet of it and we’re looking for a tenant or tenants,” Maciejewski said. “Another medical group would obviously be nice, but any professional business. We don’t want a retail business.”

Another reason for the move, he said, is that the firm has outgrown its facility across the street. Patients often move through the process of exam, diagnosis and treatment quickly to save them time, money and to make things easier for the person driving them, as many of their clients are unable to drive themselves to and from appointments.

The new facility will add two more exam rooms and two more screening rooms. While they do not perform surgeries, the new facility will be equipped for some of the laser procedures done by the four doctors, who are Paul Lee, Mehdi Khan, Christopher Jermak and Ramakrishna Ratnakaram.

The new Retina Consultants is expected to open its doors sometime in October.

Our very own nationally recognized Eye Surgeon Dr. Faruk Koreishi retires.

koreishi

Dr. Faruk M. Koreishi, a nationally recognized eye surgeon with a practice in Niagara Falls, Williamsville and Orchard Park retired Friday  August 1st 2015, after 40 years of service to the Western New York community.

The first physician in the Western New York area who restricted his practice to diseases and surgery of vitreous and retina – repair of damaged vitreous and retina in the back of the eye – Dr. Koreishi established the Retina Consultants of Western New York in 1975.  Today the practice consists of four other retina specialists, who will be taking over the care of Dr. Koreishi’s patients.

Among his many accomplishments, he performed vision-saving surgery on former Buffalo Mayor Anthony Masiello in 1999. If left untreated, Masiello would have likely lost his vision. He has also treated professional boxers, artists, and coaches from Buffalo professional sports teams. Through his technical skills as a surgeon, Dr. Koreishi has helped thousands of people in Western New York maintain and improve their eyesight.

“When people get retina detachments and other retina diseases they lose vision. I’ve done surgery on patients and have brought their vision back,” he said, adding, “It is very gratifying to know that I’ve saved their vision. I’ve received so many cards thanking me. One wife wrote me a very touching letter that thanked me for saving her husband’s eye because they subsequently went to Hawaii where he could meet and see his family, as well as the beauty of Hawaii for a final time before an unexpected death.”

The news of his retirement spurred congratulatory letters of appreciation from both Congressmen Brian Higgens and Chris Collins.  Mayor Byron Brown also declared July 31 as “Dr. Koreishi Day” in honor of his retirement.

Dr. Koreishi is a nationally renowned fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the New York State Medical Society, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the Buffalo Ophthalmology Society. He has also served as the President of both the Asian Americans Physicians’ Association (AAPA), Erie County Medical Society and the WNY Ophthalmology Society. He is also an active member of the Islamic Society of Niagara Frontier, the Family Justice Center, and the Coalition for the Advancement of Muslim Women.

Over the years, Dr. Koreishi has been recognized on several occasions for his distinguished contributions to the healthcare industry. He received the 2014 Ross Eye Institute Community Ophthalmologist Of The Year Award, and in 2012, he was awarded Physician of the Year by the Asian American Physicians Association. He was also presented a human services award from the Muslim Public Affairs Council.

Dr. Koreishi resides in North Buffalo with his wife, Dr. Aziza Karimi, a Child Psychologist. They have been married for 46 years and have 4 children who are all doctors. They also have three grandchildren.

He plans to spend his retirement with his family, traveling, and enjoying his passion for photography and religion.

We must reduce drug costs to curb Medicare spending (Letter to the Editor)

On May 1st, 2014 – Faruk M. Koreishi, M.D. F.A.C.S responded to  an article in the Buffalo News’ Opinion section. The article was printed on April 10, 2014 and was entitled,“Where the Medicare Millions Go”.

Dr. Koreishi’s response is as follows:

“We must reduce drug costs to curb Medicare spending.”

As a senior retina surgeon in practice for 38 years, I need to respond to the April 10 News article titled, “Where the Medicare millions go.” Ophthalmology has one of the highest percentages of elderly patients among medical specialties. Common and expensive ophthalmic diseases occur in this age group, including cataract, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, etc.

AMD is a leading cause of legal blindness in people over age 60 in the Western world. More than 3 million people experience visual loss due to AMD, a figure that may triple by the year 2020. For wet AMD, a more severe form, the treatment is the use of intravitreal injections. We are able to prevent legal blindness on a lot of these patients with very good results. The three commonly used drugs are Lucentis, Eylea and Avastin. The cost of either Lucentis or Eylea is approximately $2,000 per injection. Medicare pays 80 percent of the drug costs, which the doctor pays back to the drug company. The doctor does not make any money on these drugs. On the contrary, if the patient or the patient’s secondary insurance does not pay the doctor, a loss results.

Medicare reimbursement to the doctors can be very misleading. According to Dr. David W. Parke II, CEO of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, “Transparency is important, but drawing clinical conclusions from this particular data set is anything but transparent and easy.” The doctors should weigh the cost of the expensive drugs and their cost effectiveness versus the use of more reasonably priced drugs. The drug company can cut down the Medicare expense by lowering the cost of the expensive drug.

Faruk M. Koreishi, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Retina Consultants of WNY Employee publishes new novel nationally.

On August 20th 2013, our IT person Bob Souliske, released a new novel entitled “Ancient Darkness” in conjunction with Tate Publishing LLC.

Ancient darkness is a fantasy novel in the traditions of the classics like Lord of the Rings and the Chronicles of Narnia. However, it does not emulate or simply copy these classics, instead it tips its hat to them and attempts to forge forward.

The story takes place during a time of a “religious war”. An empire has risen that fanatically follows a religion of their own making. They have waged war upon all that refuse to follow. This “holy war” has consumed the world of Shadora, and in doing so has awaken and ancient and malevolent evil.

The main groups of characters are in the wrong places at the wrong time. They are thrown into the heart of the war as defenders of the truth “Light of creation”. They will defy and empire and resist an ancient darkness.

Jim Miller, marketing representative from Tate had this to say in a recent newspaper article concerning the novel.

Tate Publishing and Enterprises, LLC found the book had a major quality that it searched for in its products: marketability.

“Even though it’s a book in a popular genre, we felt it tells a different story,” said Jim Miller, a Tate marketing representative. Tate is a Christian-owned company and he said while the books published are not religious, per se, Souliske’s work “has a definite Christian resonance.”

Miller said the book is “well written, has good dialogue, and is very descriptive” in creating a “new world of sci-fi and fantasy.”

Creating such a new world is difficult, Miller explained, because many fantasy authors tend to copy classic works like The Lord of the Rings or the Chronicles of Narnia.

“We were looking for something that would have the ability to stand on its own, and we felt enough of the population will enjoy this book,” Miller added.

You can read the entire article here:

The book is available anywhere books are sold, but can be purchased online at amazon.com, barnes and noble online, or directly from the publisher at tatepublishing.com.
